Uttar Pradesh Resident Arrested with Illegal Firearm in Police Crackdown
In a significant operation by the Police Commissionerate’s Crime Investigation Agency (CIA-3), a 35-year-old man from Uttar Pradesh was apprehended for illegal possession of a firearm. The arrest, made near Phullanwal Chowk, marks a critical step in the police’s efforts to curb illegal weapon circulation in the region.
The accused, identified as Sonu Kumar, was found carrying a country-made .12 bore pistol along with a live cartridge. This discovery was made during a routine stop and search operation by the police team, led by CIA 3 in-charge inspector Avtar Singh. The operation was based on actionable intelligence indicating the accused’s movement from Dugri towards Phullanwal Chowk.
Inspector Avtar Singh revealed that Kumar had been residing in rented accommodation in Sham Nagar, close to the Amar Shaheed Sukhdev Thapar inter-state bus terminal, making the location a strategic point for the police operation. The arrest sheds light on the mobility of individuals involved in illegal arms dealings and their efforts to blend into urban settings.
The investigation further uncovered that Kumar had allegedly procured the weapon from Uttar Pradesh following a dispute with rivals, indicating a potential motive linked to personal vendettas. However, Inspector Singh noted that, as of now, no previous criminal record has been found for Kumar, suggesting that this might have been his first foray into illegal activities, or at least the first to come to the attention of law enforcement.
In response to this arrest, the police have registered a case against Sonu Kumar under section 25-54-59 of the Arms Act at the Sadar police station, initiating legal proceedings that underscore the seriousness with which authorities are addressing the issue of illegal firearms.
This case highlights the ongoing challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in combating the spread of unlicensed weapons and the potential threats they pose to public safety. The recovery of the country-made pistol not only prevents potential criminal activities but also serves as a deterrent to those engaged in the illegal arms trade.
The Police Commissionerate’s proactive approach and reliance on community tips exemplify the critical role of intelligence-led policing in maintaining law and order. As the case progresses, further investigations will aim to uncover any broader networks involved in arms smuggling and ensure that all individuals linked to this illegal trade are brought to justice.
